“ Trea-Turner Overdrive ”
Best Item of the Day
Syracuse Chiefs – Trea Turner Garden Gnome
If you haven’t heard of Trea Turner yet, then you must be living under a rock. Waiting in the wings to become the Washington Nationals short stop/second baseman of the future, Trea has done nothing short of light up the minor leagues (as well as NCAA during his time there).
Read below for MLB.com analysis of the #9 overall MiLB prospect coming into this season.
Turner became the highest-drafted position player in North Carolina State history in 2014 when he was selected 13th overall by San Diego, and he signed for $2.9 million. After a strong pro debut that included a trip to the Arizona Fall League, he became the player to be named later in the three-team trade that sent Wil Myers to the Padres in December, although MLB rules (which have since been revised) prevented him from joining the Nationals until June. Turner moved up to Triple-A Syracuse later that month and was one of the offensive stars of the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in July. Looking toward the future, Washington called up Turner in late August after only 46 games at the Triple-A level, and he held his own on both sides of the ball while appearing in 27 games.
A plus-plus runner, Turner consistently posts excellent run times to first base and will be a basestealing threat throughout his career. He’s cleaned up his hitting mechanics since turning pro and now drives the ball across the field with more consistency, though he’s still unlikely to ever offer much in terms of over-the-fence power. Turner has some natural swing-and-miss and his approach can be too aggressive at times, but he has maintained selectivity despite a quick ascent through the Minor Leagues, which, when bundled with his speed, highlights his potential as a dynamic top-of-the-order hitter.
Turner’s wheels also serve him well at shortstop, and he possesses the necessary range, hands and arm strength to stick at the position. He also saw time at the keystone in the big leagues, and it’s possible that the Nats could use him interchangeably at both positions next season before ultimately deploying him as the everyday shortstop.
