The Washington Nationals and their MiLB affiliates never seem to run out of crazy ideas for making Jayson Werth giveaways.  From Warewerth figurines to bobble-beards and everything in between.   Today the Nationals give out the long awaited Jayson Werth Chia Pet.  This is genius by their promotional department.  Truly unique in the sga world (as far as we know – have there been other Chia players???).  We love it.

Best Item of the Day

Madison Mallards – Chris Sale Bobblehead

We picked this nice Chris Sale bobblehead as the sga of the day because the man is having one heck of a season on the mound.  In case you haven’t paid attention, Sale is racking up double-digit strikeout numbers per game at a furious pace.  At one point this year he pitched 8 consecutive games with 10 or more K’s.  In addition to those 8 in a row, Sale has throw 2  additional double-digit K games.  Pretty damn impressive stuff right there.  He is currently sitting on 177 K’s for the season in just under 140 innings pitched.  With about two months left in the season, we see no reason why Sale can’t break his career season best 226 K’s (2013).

Today 2 of the most anticipated bobblehead giveaways of the season meet head on!

Lake County Captains (Indians A) – Jobu Major League Bobblehead

Continuing with their now annual tradition, the Lake County Captains have brought back iconic Major League voodoo deity/icon Jobu!  Just like the other bobblehead giveaway of the day (One-Eyed Willie), you better show up crazy early if you want to get this one.  The first Jobu bobbleheads from the Captains are highly sought after and come with a pricetag to match!  Last season was the 25th Anniversary of the theatrical release of the original Major League movie, which explains how all this started.  We love the first Jobu, and we really like this years’s iteration in full Captains uniform…BUT we are hoping moving forward they switch it up and dig a little deeper into bevy of characters to immortalize in bobblehead form next season!

Potomac Nationals (Nationals A) – One Eyed Willie Bobblehead

The Potomac Nationals will give out some Goonies themed One-Eyed Willie bobbleheads today.  2015 was the 30th Anniversary year of the  theatrical release and a lot of MiLB franchises got in on the action.  If you recall earlier this year the Chunk Bobble-Belly was a huge hit by the Akron RubberDucks.  This is one of those top-tier anticipated giveaways of the season right here.  The type of sga that crosses Hollywood and sports culture and draws huge crowds of fans to the stadium.  If you want one as a fan of the movie or just someone looking to make a pretty penny on the resale (perhaps to fuel your bobblehead habit and passions elsewhere?); just make sure you show up extra early.

Houston Astros – Craig Biggio Bobblehead

The last of the 2015 MLB Hall of Fame class is about to get his weekend long tribute Houston.  While the other three HOF inductees this year were all first ballot picks, Biggio had to wait until his third time on the ballot to get into the Hall.  Check out this link to the MLB Hall of Fame website to see their write-up on Biggio.  He is a hero in Houston, where he spent his entire 20 year career.  It’s rare to see someone spend their MLB career with one franchise, but when they do, it’s for good reason.  They exhibit both skill on the field and a personality and dedication to the sport and the fans that endears them forever.  Stay tuned for more Biggio themed giveaways from the Astros all weekend long.

If you want to have some Biggio related laughs, read this Onion article poking fun at his penchant for being hit by pitches (he holds the modern era record, and is second all time in baseball history).

Hopefully Cole Hamels sticks around a few extra hours in Philly for this sga because he’s gonna need it to pack his lunch for the trip down to Texas.  In case you missed is Hamels will be shipped today to the Rangers in exchange for a bevy of prospects on their way to Philly.  It’s not a fancy sga, but it’s functional.  We here at the SgaExchange give lots of credit to giveaway items that fit into your day to day life and allow you to show off your fandom like this.  So it may not be a bobblehead (there is one today – a mascot bobble in fact), but we think if you had to pick one sga today to have (helps if you’re a Phillies fan), this is the one.

Best Item of the Day

Los Angeles Dodgers – Yasiel Puig Bobblehead

One of the most recognizable names in the MLB over the past few seasons has been the animated Cuban, Yasiel Puig.  He’s show flashes of brilliance both in the field and at the plate.  But detracting from his raw talent and sky high potential is his conduct both on and off the field.  Cocky and showboat are common descriptions of Puig while he is on the field.  To the point that he has been told to tone it down and mature real fast if he wants to avoid the negatives that come with how he conducts himself on the team.  Off the field, he’s had his run in with minor controversy if you remember his 80+ speeding ticket (thats 80+ mph, not his speed rating on the basepaths!) in Florida a few years back.  Ultimately he is young, and just broke out in big leagues after defecting from Cuba.  So there is a lot to be taken with a grain of salt now, in hopes that he settles in, and down, and matures to reach his true potential on and off the diamond.

In the meantime, there are talks going on right now as the trade deadline looms that might mean some other team besides the Dodgers soon will be charged with the task of breaking this wild stallion.  Let’s see how this week plays out and what might be in store for Puig’s future.  Hopefully he stays focused on the field and gets things rolling, because his numbers this season are less than remarkable.  Take a look at his stats on the 2015 thus far (baseball-reference.com).

We’re dubbing today Pedro Day in the sga world.  Pedro Martinez was just inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York over the weekend.  It is well deserved and everyone should be happy for him.  Through all of his antics during his career, there is no one who could deny this mans dominance on the pitcher’s mount.  Check out his career stats below (baseball-reference.com).  The win percentage, K’s, and career ERA alone are enough to make him Hall worthy.  Add in his post-season performances and awards throughout his career; there was no question he would be a first ballot HOF inductee.

Here is a look at the two sgas being given out today to honor this great ballplayer.  You have a HOF plaque from the Red Sox and a nice MiLB bobblehead of Pedro from the Reading Fightin’ Phils. This past weekend was saw some Randy Johnson sgas.  Now we see the Pedros coming out.  There have been a trickle of John Smoltz giveaways as well.  We eagerly await this weekend when the Craig Biggio sgas hit distribution.  This year truly had an amazing HOF class and we’re fans of them all.  We’re equally as excited to see them all memorialized and honored in the form of some fantastic sgas!
