Memorial Day weekend across the MLB is always a great time of year.  You get to see military personnel attending the games in droves.  There are lots of great tributes to those who gave their lives serving our county.  Many stadiums get flyovers with jets and troops parachuting into stadiums.  Since baseball is America’s national pastime, it only makes sense they’d go all out to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and preserve our way of life.  Lots of teams wear military/patriotic style uniforms this weekend.  Yesterday the Las Vegas 51s MiLB team gave some out as SGAs.  Today the Pirates do the same up in the MLB.  We love that this is a “Kids” camo jersey too.  It’s important for each generation to grow up respecting our soldiers and all they do for us.  This is a small, but not at all insignificant way to hook kids minds and hearts early on and instill some respect in them.  Take your kids to the game and get them this amazing tribute jersey to our soldiers this Memorial Day weekend!

Las Vegas 51s (Mets AAA) – Patriotic Jersey

Amidst all the offerings, we made a tough call here with our pick of the day.  So many bobbleheads to pick from…how will we decide?  Well, in all honesty, even with a dearth of great bobbles/statues/gnomes, we are going with a replica jersey!  I know people will scoff at this pick.  But while bobbles are great (and the players today are top notch – especially Nolan Ryan), the Las Vegas 51s replica patriotic themed jersey is our favorite item of the day.  While camo hats tend to be a bit cheesy, at the SGAexchange we always love a good camo/military style jersey.  These items tend to fall under the radar too and be tougher to find.  People will put those bobbleheads all over Ebay within hours of the game.  But you’ll have to search a little harder to get the really cool replica jerseys some franchises pump out.  Lots of people tend to hold onto them.  So not many make it to the secondary market.  The picture we have right now isn’t that great, but we will put a high quality shot the day of the release when they become available.

P.s – Had we picked a bobble, it would have been a tough call between the Nolan Ryan from the Round Rock Express and the CHAMP Vader Bobble-Waist from the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders! Star Wars or Nolan Ryan…tough call, but Ryan is a legend so he’d of edged it out in the end.

Rome Braves (Braves A) – 2014 HOF Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, and Bobby Cox Bobblehead

A triple bobblehead featuring 2 HOF pitchers and 1 HOF manager…this piece if simple amazing!  Anyone who followed baseball in the 90’s must of rued the Braves.  Granted their absurd run of NL East division titles didn’t translate into tons of post season success (only 1 WS victory during 14 consecutive division titles), as a Phillies fan on the outside looking in…it was hard times for non-Braves fans.  This bobblehead commemorates two of the greatest pitchers of a generation, and arguably one of the most successful managers as well.

Boston Red Sox – Luis Tiant Bobblehead

The Braves signed him to a minor league contract to play with their Triple-A Richmond, where he pitched well, and was acquired by the Louisville Colonels, a farm team of the Boston Red Sox.

He was quickly called back up to the majors, and despite struggling through 1971 with a 1–7 record and 4.88 ERA, he would soon become one of the greatest and most beloved pitchers in Red Sox history and a great idol in Boston. Starting to be known as El Tiante at Fenway Park, in 1972 Tiant regained his old form with a 15–6 record and led the league with a 1.91 ERA. He would win 20 games in 1973 and 22 in 1974.

Though hampered by back problems in 1975, he won 18 games for the American League Champion Red Sox and then excelled for Boston in the postseason.

Tiant went 21–12 in 1976, 12–8 in 1977, and 13–8 in 1978.

Atlanta Braves – Javy Lopez Bobblehead Night

On a night where there is no other SGAs to be heard of, we are glad what we do have is a bobblehead.  Show up for the Atlanta Braves game tonight and get a nifty Javy Lopez bobblehead.  With the team in rebuild/dismantle mode since last season, it seems the marketing/promotions department was hard pressed to fill a seasons worth of SGAs with current players.  So they have gone old school this year with the likes of this Javy Lopez bobble, and upcoming David Justice and John Smoltz ones.  While they have started off pretty well this season, Braves fans should embrace the nostalgia of these players from the past.  Because who knows when the tides will turn and the current squad will flounder about moving forward this season.

Miami Marlins – Giancarlo Stanton Growth Chart

Giancarlo “Mike” Stanton is an absolute beast.  Standing 6’6 and weighing north of 240 lbs; it’s no surprise Stanton possesses arguably the most powerful swing in all of Major League Baseball.  Just last week he literally hit a ball out of Dodgers’ Stadium.  Two nights ago he destroyed a home run to dead center in Marlins’ Park.  Both blasts were over 450 feet.  So who better to make a growth chart of and have your children try and measure up to than Giancarlo Stanton?  Odds are they won’t live up to his superhuman dimensions and strength.  But on top of the physical attributes, Stanton is a true role model to boot.  He has stuck around in a Marlins franchise that before this year appeared destined for self-imposed mediocrity.  Did he complain about it or display any frustration? Not really.  He showed up to work and did his job.  He was rewarded with a $300 million dollar contract and what appears to be a true commitment by the club and owner to finally build towards competitiveness.  It tells a lot about a player’s character to display such maturity and professionalism.  Great guy.  Great ballplayer.  Great SGA item right here!

***As an added perk this growth chart is made with what looks like flag quality cloth material.  Which means it will be durable.  Years back I remember getting a Ryan Howard growth chart that was a simple wall poster.  No durability whatsoever and over time all posters get a little dinged up.  With a growth chart where people might be leaning up against it regularly to measure themselves, durability is key!

Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Reds AA) – Bubba Watson Golf Day Bobblehead

There are tons of SGAs today (Saturdays are always jam packed), but the Bubba Watson bobblehead from the Pensacola Blue Wahoos is our favorite.  Bubba Watson may be a golfer, but the theme of this bobblehead oddly enough has nothing to do with golf.  Bubba has won The Masters twice (2012, 2014), so we were expecting something relating to that insane accomplishment.  But it looks like this golfer bobblehead is designed to commemorate Watson throwing out a first pitch at a game.  In any event, and absence of the very sport he plays being peculiar, we still like it.  He is sporting a Blue Wahoos jersey and what look like khaki pants.  Hand in motion to unleash the first pitch.  Just an overall nice looking bobblehead for any collection!
