There were a few of us here at SGAExchange that felt compelled to pay tribute to both teams that went to the World Series in 2014 was the right thing to do here.  That we should pick the best items for today to be the San Francisco Giants WS replica ring and the Kansas City Royals AL championship replica trophy.  But in the end…you must always pay tribute to the King, above all else.  So that is what we did and selected the Mariners Felix Hernandez bobblehead as the item of the day for today.  Just check out his stats over the past six seasons and tell us we are wrong here.

Best Item of the Day

If you glance down at the list for today, you can see picking out the best SGA for April 17th took a little thought.  So many choices, but there can be only one (or two if we call it a tie)!  From this huge pile of SGAs we see some top tier items that stand out.  Items like the Mariners beard hat and Cubs winter aviator bearskin hat made our “Best of 2015 by Team” lists earlier this month.  Down in the MiLB we’ve got a Hagerstown Suns beer mug (we always give props to beer related SGAs).  As well as a Clearwater Threshers Phinley mascot bobblehead.  So how do we choose?  What will be the best SGA of the day for April 17th?

Seattle Mariners – Beard Hat

We had to go with the beard hat.  We loved it in previous seasons and we still love it in 2015.  This year the beard is a emerald glowing blue color.  You hope to see more items in the spirit of this hat around the league.  By that we mean SGAs that embody the local culture of the franchise.  Like the fedora hat trend started with the Marlins down in Miami (we are pretty sure); this beard hat truly symbolizes some of the local hipster and/or rugged northwestern style you can’t miss when looking at people throughout Seattle.  It’s fun.  It’s symbolic.  It’s original.  It’s functional (cold and rainy all the time up there).  Hell, it’s even just plain nice to look at with the colors.  What else could you want in an SGA?  Not much we say.

San Francisco Giants – Irish Heritage Beanie

The Giants throw a lot of cultural heritage nights throughout the season.  Each one typically comes with some special item only those with special event tickets can obtain.  Tonight is Irish Heritage night and that special item is a pretty nice knit beanie.  Some people might look at this hat and see the rolling green hills of Ireland. Personally, I see the green of beautifully manicured outfield grass.  To each their own.  There literally isn’t any other SGAs today besides another Giants item, a 2014 WS Champs calendar (to all fans without the need for special tickets).  But clearly this Irish Heritage beanie would of competed for the top spot on a day full of SGAs regardless.

As if the rivalry between the Giants and Dodgers wasn’t heated enough in recent years, tonight they both give away two items so nice that we couldn’t pick our favorite.  The best item(s) for April 15th are the Giants World Series Champions snow globe and the Dodgers Jackie Robinson replica jersey.  The Giants snow globe SGA continues a weeklong celebration of their World Series victory last year.  Already this week we have seen the Giants give out a 2014 WS Pennant and 2014 Madison Bumgarner post-season MVP bobblehead.  This snow globe looks to be a nice collector’s items for fans and non-fans alike.  The Dodgers are commemorating Jackie Robinson Day with a replica Robinson jersey for adult fans.  In case you were unaware, April 15th is always the annual celebration throughout the MLB to honor Jackie.

Best Item of the Day

San Francisco Giants – Madison Bumgarner Postseason MVP Bobblehead

Pretty slim pickings today, but that is typical of games early in the week for most franchises with regards to SGAs.  From the items being given away today there is a clear-cut best in class: the Giants Madison Bumgarner bobblehead.  This bobblehead specifically commemorates his 2014 post-season efforts.  A cumulative performance many argue may have been the best overall post-season performance by a starting pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball.  Those efforts were rewarded with not only a World Series Championship ring (his 3rd WS ring in 5 years), but NLCS and WS MVP honors.

While we are Phillies fans at heart here at the SGAExchange, the Charlie Manuel in a Hawaiian shirt bobblehead wasn’t impressive enough to claim the top spot.  That being said, the Twins are giving out a nice looking hooded sweatshirt at today’s game.  We’re giving the Best Item of the Day honors to the hoodie.  It’s still pretty cold in many parts of the country right now (40s every night in Minnesota).  So Twins fans should get some good use out of this free merch for a few more weeks at least.

Best Item of the Day

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers A Midwest) – Jonathan Lucroy Double Bobblehead

Jonathan Lucroy is without question a the top catcher in the Majors right now.  Last season he managed to break some pretty impressive records.  He also managed to produce 176 hits, bat over .300, make the All-Star team, and come in 4th overall in NL MVP voting.  Beating out perennial catching favorite Buster Posey (who came in 6th in NL MVP voting).  His impressive numbers aside, this item is the best of the day because it is a “double-bobblehead”.  It features Lucroy both catching and hitting.  A double-bobblehead is a fitting tribute for the man who tied the Brewers franchise record for doubles in 2014.  It also kicks off the Timber Rattlers bobble season, which is always as robust as any franchise in the MiLB.  Expect more to come week after week all summer long!
