The 225 hits he put up in 2014 were the most hits by a second baseman since 1936! Altuve is only 24, so we hope to see eye-popping offensive numbers like these for a long time. The Astros have languished for a while now as a franchise, but they have grown a serious core of young talent that has them poised to become contenders in no time. Don’t believe me? Just ask Sports Illustrated what they think. Not since Ichiro Suzuki, has a player merited a hit-counter bobblehead more than Jose Altuve. Check out the rest of the Astro’s SGA lineup for 2015 as well. There are some gems in the bunch, but the Altuve hit-counter bobblehead is the clear #1 choice for us. (It has a silver bat to commemorate his 2014 Silver Slugger award as well!)

If one franchise in baseball is known for the rally monkey more than most, it’s the Angels. The little dude is the teams unofficial mascot AND even has his own Twitter feed! It only makes sense that amidst their SGA items in 2015 you will find not one, but two rally monkeys. Neither of these guys came in as our top pick, but they are worth noting. Especially since one is one is a Star Wars Jedi Rally Monkey and the other is a Military Rally Monkey. Our choice for best Angels SGA in 2015 is their backpack cooler. There is no better ultimate tailgate accessory than this one. Portability is key when you want to not only tailgate, but socialize and travel around the parking lot by foot. You can’t pack up and move a BBQ grill around. But you certainly can stuff a twelve-pack on your back like some booze-laden camel and make some new friends along your journey. This item is a must have for any professional tailgaters out there.

From the moment we saw this Athletics item we feel in love with it. It is difficult for a t-shirt to crack the top picks list for any team. With all the bobbleheads, hoodies/jackets, and other high end items; how does any lowly t-shirt stand much of a chance? Well, never say never, because it’s been done. The Athletics emoji (8-bit) t-shirt is our selection for the number one A’s giveaway for the season. There will be people who refuse to agree with us on this one, but we don’t care. The Athletics colors, coupled with some retro 8-bit-ish emojis was a recipe for success. The Athletics are known for being that under-the-radar threat, that might lack flash, but is hip and capable nonetheless. We dare you not to see this t-shirt and wish you had one (even if you aren’t an A’s fan).

It rains a lot up in Seattle. So headwear is not just an accessory, it’s a necessity. For that reason we have a tie between two amazing hats as our top pick(s) for the Mariners. First up is the reprisal of a sick giveaway in seasons past; the beard hat. The second incarnation (or third maybe?) of this SGA has an emerald blue beard. We warned Orioles fans not to wear their tacky O’s clothing SGAs around Baltimore. But for some reason, we feel like it is more than safe in the hipster haven that is Seattle to wear these pieces. The second item to claim a tie for top pick is the Hisashi Iwakuma bear hat. These dangler (I think that’s what the hell these things are called) hats have been pretty popular in general for young people in recent years. I know the Phillies gave out a Phanatic one a little while back that was pretty cool looking. So we couldn’t pick which was better here. Bear hat, beard hat…bear hat, beard hat. Hence the tie at the end of the day.

We particularly like these Rangers gnomes this year because of one simple design accent: little wooden signs. Louisville Bats Johnny Cueto Beer Stein (Reds AAA – MILB)

There is nothing like drinking an ice cold beer on a hot day, while watching a baseball game (or a not-so-hot day for that matter…if it’s still early in the season). But that doesn’t mean it can’t get any better; the Louisville Bats have found a way to do just that. FREE BEER STEINS! The Cincinnati Reds AAA minor league affiliate has pulled out all the stops for Opening Night with this SGA. This looks like a really nice item here (glossy ceramic?). Johnny Cueto has been on fire in recent years, so the player pick was also a great choice.

Is there any more appropriate Opening Week giveaway item than a Welcome Mat? We think not. This is a great item and it’s functional to boot! Think about it, really. How many other SGAs do you get use out of 365 days a year?This is why we selected this item as the best the White Sox have to offer this season. If you’re not as big a fan of functionality of SGA items as we are, then you can celebrate the 10th anniversary of the White Sox 2005 World Series victory with a few celebratory items being handed out all season long. We count a total of three 2005 World Series Moments Bobbleheads , one replica World Series Ring, and a Paul Konerko statue figurine. All of the 2005 World Series memories stuff combined came in just shy of our true favorite….the Welcome Mat!

The Indians are giving out a bunch of bobbleheads and replica jerseys (throwbacks even!) this season. One bobblehead has some serious potential. As such, it has taken the crown as the best Indians SGA of 2015. Late in the season, the club will be giving out a Terry Francona Red Scooter bobblehead. While just this past week the scooter was placed on the DL, we are sure it will look perfect and undamaged as part of the bobblehead promotion. There is no official picture yet, and likely won’t be for some time since the giveaway is scheduled for September. Here is a look at what we might potentially see. It’s funny, extremely unique, and a bobblehead. Any SGA that has those three factors combined going for it is almost guaranteed a spot on the Best of the Best list!

September 12th, 2015 vs. Detroit Tigers
(First 10,000 fans)

There is a modest selection of SGAs being offered by the Tigers this season. A handful of bobbleheads compete for the top spot. Our choice was between Victor Martinez, David Price, and Yoenis Cespedes. You have old and reliable (not for much longer odds are) in V-Mart. You have a high quality SP in David Price; who is looking to show he still has the stuff in his first full season of service with Detroit. Lastly, you have the young stud, Yoenis Cespedes. He flashed both power and a respectable batting average in his MLB debut season with the Athletics back in 2012. Since then however, he has struggled to make contact as well as he did in his debut. Cespedes can still blast HR’s out of the park, but the key to his season will be maintaining a higher batting average. We see big things for Yoenis this season in Detroit. A new city, potent bats up and down the lineup, and a youthful desire to prove he can do more than bat .250 gave him the edge for our top Tigers SGA pick.

July 1st, 2015 vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Even though they couldn’t win the World Series last season, 2014 was clearly a great year for the Royals. They managed to reach the playoffs for the first time since 1985. World Series loss or not, they still made it to the championship series and are hopeful to repeat their historic run from last year into 2015. The Royals are an exciting franchise and it shows with a great lineup of SGAs this season. Some noteworthy items that did not take our best overall pick include: a sweet pair of Zumba pants and a rail-dive Mike Moustakas bobblehead.

The best item though has to be the replica American League Championship trophy. Let me repeat what I stated earlier…2014 was the first time this franchise MADE THE PLAYOFFS in almost 30 years! I grew up in Philadelphia and their playoff drought from 1994-2006 was agonizing. Who knew that Baltimore, of all places, was the fashion capitol of Major League Baseball? Our top pick(s) for the Orioles are being clumped together as a theme. That theme being fashion (yea..we’ll call it that). The Orioles have given out a plaid fedora in the past. So this year their plaid floppy hat should bring back fond memories for their fans. Additionally, their Hawaiian shirt giveaway is equally deserving of a walk down a Paris runway. If you manage to secure both of these articles of clothing we have one piece of advice for you: even though they are Orioles apparel, for your own safety please do not walk around the streets of Baltimore sporting both at the same time (or either one on it’s on for that matter). There is no need to risk your life so carelessly!

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are not known for being generous with their Stadium Giveaways. The franchise usually ranks at the bottom of the list in terms of items distributed each season. However, this year they have a respectable lineup. While there are not too many giveaway days total, the items they are distributing are certainly worthwhile. Noteworthy items include a number of bobbleheads, a replica stadium, and a Pedro Martinez Hall of Fame plaque. The standout item is their Star Wars theme night giveaway: a Death Star baseball. Make sure your purchase the special ticket required to obtain this item if you plan to attend the game. A few other franchises have given out similar Death Star baseballs in past years. But not many, so these items are still unique and cool enough to garner a lot of attention.

Comparing the Yankees giveaway list from this year to last, we feel they’ve lost some of their flash. Don’t get us wrong, the 2015 SGA list is good, real good even. You have a number of bobbleheads (including a Babe Ruth), a replica full-sized bat, and even a collectible toy truck. But some of the effort put into the past when the Yankees came up with SGA ideas just seems to be lacking. With a less than stellar roster, why no continuing tribute items for Jeter or Rivera? Where is one of those 8 million World Series rings (in replica form) that their fans never shut up about? Like we said, it’s a good list, but not up to normal Yankees standards. The best item we see is the Masahiro Tanaka bobblehead. In his first year pitching in the Majors (after dominating 6 seasons in Japan ) he compiled the following eye-popping stats: 13 wins (in only 20 games started), 2.77 ERA, 141 K’s in only 136.1 IP. He also was an All-Star, and finished 5th overall in the AL ROY voting. Tanaka is the clear-cut ace on the team this year. Sadly, he is trying to pitch through a partially torn UCL. So fans are going to be holding their breath, and expectations of a repeat performance of his stellar 2014 numbers are unlikely.

With well over 40 (yes 40!) items on the list this year, don’t assume they’re just giving out a lot of junk for the sake of it. The variety and quality of the items being given out by the Rays is nothing short of spectacular. We could try to list them, but there are too many. For the Rays we decided not only to pick our favorite, but a runner-up as well. The runner-up is the Evan Longoria walk-up music bobblehead. A bunch of teams in the past year or so have jumped on the talking bobblehead craze. The Rays put a unique spin on the concept with the walk-up music angle. If you are a big baseball fan and watch a lot of games, you know you enjoy discovering what songs your favorite players decide to blast as they approach the plate. Admit it! The reason we gave this one runner-up status is because while the idea is awesome (we love it), they missed a much better opportunity by not using it with past Rays player Pat Burrell. If you aren’t aware, Pat The Bat is known to have played “Hit Me One More Time”, by Brittney Spears as his walk-up music back in the day. As a Phillies fan, I’d of paid dearly to get a Pat Burrell, Brittney Spears walkup music bobble!

Our top pick for the Rays in 2015 is their Rays Etch-A-Sketch. Call us guilty of nostalgia, but this item, as well as a few others (Longoria Rubber Ducky, Alex Cobb Gumby, Retro Tin Lunchbox) are just plain fun. Try explaining to your kids how in the world an Etch-A-Sketch was fun while they stare like zombies into their Iphones. Or what the hell Gumby is exactly! Classic toys are always a welcome site as SGAs these days.
June 14th, 2015 vs. Chicago White Sox

The Blue Jays are the lone team north of the border, in a sports landscape dominated by ice hockey. This season looks to convert a few of those fans over to baseball, because the Blue Jays have made some serious off-season acquisitions to bolster their chances at competing in the always cutthroat AL East. Arguably the most exciting pickup was Josh Donaldson. Can he keep up his power surge over the past few seasons? Will he eclipse the 30 HR or 100 RBI mark for the first time in his short professional career? Only time will tell. One thing is for sure, with Donaldson joining the likes of Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion…there is going to be no lack of excitement in the Blue Jays offense this year. With all the potential he brings to the franchise, we picked the Josh Donaldson replica white jersey as our favorite Blue Jays SGA item this season.

It happens to also be the only MLB SGA item of the day, but we might of picked it anyways over the typical first couple days of season SGAs (magnet schedules and rally towels). A lot of clubs host heritage celebration days to honor their particular region’s unique local population blend. The MLB truly is a melting pot and so are it’s fans. Franchises across the league will celebrate Irish, Italian, Jewish, Puerto Rican, Japanese, Polynesian, and many more cultures throughout the season with dedicated special event days.

Today the Marlins celebrate the Jewish holiday of Passover with their “Passover at the Park” special event. You must purchase a special event ticket package to partake. For pretty much the same price of normal tickets anyways ($18 to$25 depending on seating choice), you can partake in a pregame festival starting at 4:00 PM featuring kosher for Passover food, entertainment and a live performance by the Maccabeats! Special ticket holders will also be entitled to one of these nifty t-shirts.
