Best Item of the Day

While we aren’t picking a single item as the Best Item of the Day; we are acknowledging an oft under-appreciated SGA item………………………………………………..the magnet schedule.  Most tend to scoff at the magnet schedule.  But when you think about it, if you get one of these and stick it up on your refrigerator, you’re going to make use of it every day for the rest of the season. It’s almost inevitable that while you’re grazing around the ole ice box thinking about what to stuff your face with next, that you’ll peruse your local team magnet schedule if it’s right there stuck to the door.  Scanning for an upcoming home-stand against a team you really would love to see.  You know you do it!

So today we tip our hat to the pinkie finger of SGAs.  It may not be the greatest or most valuable SGA, but just like the pinkie finger…you use it a lot more than you think and you damn sure wouldn’t want to be without it!

Minnesota Timberwolves – Gorgui Dieng Bobblehead

The Timberwolves wrap up a blockbuster bobblehead sga set tonight in their final regular season game versus the Spurs.  Tonight’s offering is a Gorgui Bieng bobblehead.  It is the fifth and final bobblehead in a 5 piece set spanning back to November of this season.  Previous players immortalized from the set include Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, Zach Lavine, and Ricky Rubio.  Boston Red Sox – Ortiz 500 Necklace

Red Sox Marketing & Promotions Coordinator Steven Oliveira said, “Once Ortiz announced that this would be his final season, we knew we had to celebrate his tremendous career in Boston.” “Although we will be honoring him in a number of ways throughout the year, it only feels right to have him be the focal point of our 2016 giveaways.  With all respect to the Red Sox legends of the past, I don’t know that any player in Red Sox history has meant more to this franchise and city than Big Papi.”

From that statement was born (among many other Ortiz themed sgas) the replica 500 HR diamond necklace!  Back in February at an annual Red Sox picture day, Ortiz, who will retire at the end of the 2016 season, posed with a 500 homer necklace, which appears to be filled with diamonds.  Fans at Fenway tonight will get their very on replica version of the necklace!  We can tell you from search hits on the SGAExchange that this promises to be a very sought after item across the country.

Colorado Rockies – Nolan Arenado Diamond Leader Bobblehead

Nolan Arenado hogged all the pomp and most of the circumstance during the home-opener celebration at Coors Field. He was handed a Gold Glove, Silver Slugger and so many trophies, somebody should have also given him a wheel barrel to cart ’em all home.

Have you seen the lack of respect already shown Arenado this season? MLB Network ranked the three-time Gold Glove winner as the sixth-best third baseman in baseball. Not overall position players, mind you. Just third basemen. That’s nuts.

Arenado hit more home runs on the road (22) last season than at cozy Coors Field (20). Boom.

  “ There’s no crying in baseball! ”

Best Item of the Day

 Reading Fightin’ Phils – Ruth Hartman Bobblehead

The Reading Baseball Hall of Fame will add some majesty to its membership when the late “Queen of Baseballtown” Ruth Hartman gets inducted on Friday, April 8th at 7:05 p.m. Hartman played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, the inspiration for “A League of Their Own”, for the Fort Wayne Daisies and Racine Bells during the 1940s. Later in life, Hartman was a physical education teacher in the Reading School District before founding the school’s softball program in 1976. In 18 seasons as head coach, she led the Red Knights to a 217-73 record, two Berks County Championships, three District titles, and two state runner-ups.

In addition to the induction ceremony, the first 2,000 adults 15 & over will receive a Ruth Hartman Bobble Head thanks to Pepsi. The bobblehead is modeled after Hartman’s time as a player. The Fightins will also welcome all softball players to the ballpark that game, including former players from Hartman’s terrific Reading High squads. Hartman’s daughter Karen Kase and grandaughter Kelly Beaver will accept the honor on her behalf. Memorabilia from Hartman’s illustrious life will be on display thanks to her family. Los Angeles Angels – Trout & Pujols HR Bobblehead 

Trout blasted 41 home runs last season, just one more than Pujols. Believe it or not, though, the pair weren’t the top homer-hitting duo last season, falling one long ball shy of Colorado Rockies teammates Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez’s total of 82 home runs.

Toronto Blue Jays sluggers Josh Donaldson and Jose Bautista equaled the Angels pair’s output with 81 combined round-trippers.
